There are so many pros to an off-roading elopement, but here are just a few:

There’s no hiking required.

If a strenuous trek on foot isn’t your thing, off-roading opens up outdoors to you in a much less demanding way. Couples can still experience incredible ridgelines, hidden waterfalls, desert overlooks, or hidden forest clearings. You don’t need to hike miles with wedding attire, flowers, or gear if you don’t want to. It’s an ideal option for duos who love the drama of adventurous landscapes without the physical strain.

4×4 Off-Roading (Traditional Off-Road Vehicles)

Just like elopements, off-roading isn’t a one-size-fits-all adventure. There are several distinct styles of exploring terrain, and understanding the differences helps couples choose the mode that best fits their comfort level and vision. 4×4 vehicles, like Jeeps, Land Cruisers, or Defenders, are the most common ways to venture into off-grid destinations. These vehicles are designed with stability, weather protection, and space for gear. They’re ideal for steep climbs, rocky pathways, river crossings, and uneven landscapes. 4x4ing is an ideal choice for couples who want to travel deeper into the wilderness without sacrificing comfort. 

Dirt Bike/Motorbike Off-Roading

Off-road dirt bikes or motorbikes are one of the most agile ways to traverse rugged landscapes. They can maneuver through narrow forests, rocky single-lane trails, riverbeds, or steep climbs that even ATVs can’t reach. This style of off-roading has an unmatched sense of freedom, but it usually demands some sort of prior experience, strong riding skills, and a higher tolerance for physical challenge. For couples versed in motorcycling, this kind of off-roading elopement can be a wildly invigorating way to see far-flung regions while tying the knot. 

UTV/Side-By-Side Off-Roading

Utility Terrain Vehicles, (UTVs), also known as side-by-sides, bridge the gap between maneuverability of dirt bikes and the stability of a full-sized 4×4. They have the capability to handle technical terrain exceptionally well – especially in desert regions or mountain environments. They have a low center of gravity, strong suspensions, and agile steering. UTVs are great for couples seeking something more open-air, but still backed with multiple wheels and a roll-cage around them. They’re fun and fast ways to reach incredible viewpoints or narrow trails where larger vehicles can’t fit. 

ATV Off-Roading (All Terrain Vehicles/Quads)

ATVs can be a more physically engaging, hands-on way to roam through the backcountry. With their smaller frames and ability to navigate winding trails, they connect riders with the terrain. You’ll feel every turn, dip, and climb. They’re also compact enough to drive through trails that are otherwise too tight or technical for full-sized vehicles. ATVs are wonderful for couples who want to add a sense of adrenaline to their elopement experience. Let it be known that they do require some balance and strength in congruency with comfort in exposed riding, making them best suited for couples who enjoy active, adventure-rich experiences. 

Overlanding

While not as adrenaline-driven as other types of off-roading, overlanding is a style of extended off-road travel that emphasizes self-sufficiency, exploration, and multi-day journeys. Overlanding typically involves fully-equipped 4×4 vehicles with rooftop tents, camping setups, and gear designed for long stretches off the grid. It’s perfect for couples who want to extend their elopement across multiple days. You can travel from one remote location to the next, sleeping under the stars, and embracing the adventure as an integral part of the experience.

Sand Dune Off-Roading

In parts of the world with expansive dune systems – for example, California’s Imperial Sand Dunes, the Arabian Peninsula, or parts of Australia – sand-specific off-roading becomes its own category. Whether you’re in dune buggies, UTVs, or specialized 4×4’s, this particular type of off-roading calls for cascading through shifting dunes and cresting sand ridges. It’s fast, thrilling, and surreal. However, a sand dune off-roading elopement requires unique driving skills and a guide familiar with the landscape.

Whether you’re a novice or a pro opting for an off-roading elopement, having a baseline understanding of general safety will build your confidence, making your experience worthwhile and fun. Here is a compilation of six ways to ensure you’re off-roading safely and responsibly: 

Tip #1: Listen to Your Guide

If you’re planning an off-roading elopement, it’s likely you will hire an experienced guide with your rental to help you navigate different landscapes throughout the day. Their expertise is invaluable, which means following their instructions is paramount to the process. This experience should be exhilarating and overwhelmingly positive, so take your guide’s advice and insight seriously for the best outcomes during your elopement. They have the first-hand knowledge to successfully lead you through the day with both caution and adventure.

Tip #2: Know the Capabilities of Your Vehicle

Know the capabilities of your vehicle. It’s important to understand that not all off-road vehicles are created equal when it comes to capability and performance. A completely stock vehicle will perform differently from one that’s been modified, and knowing the limitations of each ensures off-roading safety. Common modifications include lift kits, upgraded suspension, differential locks, specialty tires, etc. 

Tip #3: Off-Road Using the “Buddy System”

 Off-road using the “Buddy System”. If you’re adventuring with a guide, chances are you won’t have to worry about this since you’ll be off-roading under their expertise. However, if you’re planning your own solo excursion, it’s best to bring a second person with another capable vehicle. Any experienced off-roader will tell you that anything can happen, and operating under the “Buddy System” ensures greater safety and preparation for all.

Tip #4: Understand Different 4×4 Settings

Understand different 4×4 settings. The most common settings you’ll use are 4-High and 4-Low. 4-High allows you to drive near a normal driving pace through slick roads, gravel areas, and snow on paved or smoother ground. 4-Low enables you to navigate more rugged terrain that may be steep, rocky, or full of deep mud at a much slower pace. For example, a scenario in which you would use your 4-High gear would be if you were driving on a highway during a snowstorm. Alternatively, you would use your 4-Low gear if you were driving through mud or rocks in woodland landscapes. 

Tip #5: Learn Safe Winch and Towing Operations

Learn safe winch and towing operations. You will frequently encounter winches, kinetic ropes, and tow straps. Each serves a different purpose in the world of off-roading. A winch is typically attached to your vehicle, and is primarily used in situations where you need to recover your vehicle by yourself, or anchor your vehicle while you’re climbing steep or slick terrain. A kinetic rope is generally used to assist one vehicle that is stuck by attaching it to another to create an effective way to reduce potential damage to either vehicle. The fibers in the rope store the kinetic energy, causing it to snap back (kind of like a bungee cord), and use the stored power to pull the vehicle out. A tow strap allows you to securely and safely pull a vehicle out with the raw power of the second vehicle.

Tip #6: Know how to read a map/GPS to identify property lines and trails. 

Remote and backcountry areas are full of various trails and markers that separate dangerous landscapes, private property, and protected plots of land from off-roading paths. Having the ability to recognize these things through signs, land marks, up-to-date maps, and GPS devices are crucial to your safety, the safety of others, and conservation efforts. Although working with a guide will eliminate this self-reliant aspect of off-roading to some degree, it is especially important to review and familiarize yourself with the maps/GPS routes of your chosen area ahead of time. Being overly prepared is an asset to an off-roading elopement.

colorado

Colorado is a tried-and-true powerhouse destination for off-roading elopements. It’s got crazy elevation shifts, thousands of acres of public lands, and some of the most famous 4×4 trails in the entirety of the United States. Colorado is a playground of high-alpine passes, deserts made of red-rocks, evergreen forests, and mountain ranges that feel as if they’re straight out of an old Western. Couples can choose from forest service roads that wind through wildflower meadows, shelf roads like Imogene Pass, Black Bear Pass, and Engineer Pass – routes specifically known for their jaw-dropping scenery and terrain of the San Juan Mountains. If you travel to Ouray, Telluride, and Silverton, entire landscapes open up to only those with a genuine off-road vehicle. There’s abandoned mining towns, glacier-carved basins, and lookout points that make for epic ceremony spots. Meanwhile, the eastern plains and high desert zones offer sandy tracks, rocky mesas, and wide-open views. Aside from the grandiose landscapes throughout the state, Colorado has terrain ranging from beginner-friendly to highly skilled – further making it one of the most sought-after off-roading elopement destinations in the world.

Even if you aren’t actively a part of the off-roading scene, you’ve surely heard of the 4×4 magic in Utah. This state houses some of the most surreal terrain on earth, including the famous Moab region. Red rock landscapes, desert plateaus, slot canyons, and sandstone arches come together to create an atmosphere that feels almost extraterrestrial. Made even more invigorating when explored by 4×4, Utah gives couples the opportunity to choose from legendary trails like Hell’s Revenge, Fins & Things, or Shafer Trail in Canyonlands. Each trail delivers different blends of slickrock climbs, narrow ledges, and panoramic vistas that stretch for miles. A large portion of Utah’s backcountry can only be accessed by rugged dirt roads or high-clearance routes, adding to the exclusivity of an off-roading elopement. There’s no shortage of beginner-friendly tracks for couples seeking something softer, or technical areas designated for experienced drivers. Whether you’re cruising the desert byways lined with arches and mesas, or scaling domes and canyons, Utah provides an unmatched off-roading experience.

Argentina

Argentina, and particularly the vast wilderness of Patagonia, is one of the most exhilarating off-roading landscapes on the planet. It’s an untamed frontier where towering peaks, shifting winds, and glacial plains create a sense of scale that’s comparable to a fantasy realm. Argentina’s terrain is made for adventure – gravel “ripio” roads that extend across endless steppes, winding mountain tracks around the Fitz Roy range, and routes leading through the windswept landscapes of El Chaltén and El Calafate. Off-roaders can navigate river crossings, high-altitude desert plateaus, and rough-cut trails that open up to turquoise lakes, forests, and granite spires. Costa Rica has earned its title as one of the best places to elope in the world for a wide array of reasons, but especially because of the off-roading opportunities available here. This is one of the few destinations where the rawness of the wilderness and the otherworldly landscapes collide seamlessly with enhanced accessibility. The country is saturated with a variety of off-roading experiences. There are vibrant jungle tracks where you can navigate your way underneath green-hued canopies, to river-crossing routes in the lowlands, to the volcanic trails of the foothills of Arenal and Rincón de la Vieja. If you feel more drawn towards the coast, there are plenty of off-roading adventures to be found there too. Inland, more advanced 4×4 routes challenge drivers with rocky inclines, mud-heavy rainforest corridors, and mountain passes rarely seen by others who stay on paved roads. Costa Rica’s trail system caters to a multitude of experience levels. There are beginner-friendly dirt roads perfect for couples wanting just a tinge of adventure. Additionally, there are expert-level technical terrains that reward you with off-grid areas ideal for truly intimate vow exchanges and portraits.

alaska

Alaska is the epitome of wild, frontier-style off-roading. It’s an immense landscape where the topography and the countryside form an adventure unlike any other. The state has an impressive network of backcountry routes, ranging from gravel highways through the vastness of the tundra, to difficult 4×4 trails carved into the Alaska Range. Couples can traverse through deep valleys, drive through boreal forests, and muddy river routes. Popular off-roading regions like the Denali Highway, Hatcher Pass, and the Kenai Peninsula have a mix of accessible dirt roads and harder paths that eventually reveal alpine lakes, glacier views, and vistas with almost no one else around. In the far north, Arctic-style tracks provide a level of solitude that’s genuinely humbling. Vietnam

Northern Vietnam is a dream for off-roaders. If you wander farther south, you can find jungle routes and red dirt tracks through the Central Highlands. Even some of the coastal regions have sandy backroads and stretches of shoreline that are perfect for a sunrise or sunset ceremony. Furthermore, Vietnam allows for multiple kinds of off-roading, meaning you can opt for a 4×4 experience or something on two wheels, like a dirt bike/motorbike. 

California

California is a west coast haven for an off-roading elopement. Thanks to its astonishing range of landscapes and climates, each carries its own style of adventure. The state has everything from soft-sand desert washes and badlands, to high-alpine trails and coastal backroads. In Southern California, destinations like Joshua Tree and Anza-Borrego turn into desert playgrounds filled with slot canyons, basalt formations, and dirt tracks that are perfect for both beginner 4×4 drivers and seasoned off-roaders. Further east, Death Valley features routes like Titus Canyon or Racetrack Valley. In the Sierra Nevada, mountain passes and forest service roads lead into pines, lakes, and granite cliffs. Northern California, (my personal favorite), adds yet another layer of diversity with redwood-lined trails and hidden roads fixed into coastal ranges that overlook the Pacific.

New Zealand

Looking for an off-roading paradise? New Zealand is exactly that – an island nation where each mile creates a dreamlike canvas for adventure-driven elopements. This country is famous for its 4×4 treks, some of them even becoming staples as the backdrops in major films. You’ve got glacier valleys in the Southern Alps, grasslands in Otago, highlands around Tongariro, and subtropical forests of the North Island.
