Maryland Elopement Guide

How to Plan an Adventurous Elopement in Maryland (And the East Coast)

If you’ve landed here, you’re likely dreaming of a wedding day that transcends the traditional. You want something that checks all of your boxes – one that’s personal, visually stunning, and completely original to you and your partner. And if you live in or near Maryland, you might be wondering: can I really have an adventurous, out-of-the-box, and meaningful elopement here on the East Coast?

The answer is a resounding, and enthusiastic, “yes”.

People are often misled to believe that in order for their elopement experience to be valid or extraordinary, they have to venture to far away lands, or complete some crazy 20-mile hike to be worthy of such a celebration. This is simply not true. The most beautiful thing about elopements is that they aren’t defined by structure or expectation – just the freedom to create something real, intentional, and true to you. Whether you’re drawn to the sun-dappled woods of the Appalachians or hidden waterfalls tucked away into Maryland’s state parks, your dream elopement doesn’t require a flight to Iceland or the Utah desert. This guide will lead you through everything you need to know to plan a Maryland elopement, (with bonus tips for the entire East Coast). It will show you how your celebration can unfold in the most unforgettable way right where you are.

Hi there, I’m Ciana – A Documentary Destination Wedding & Elopement Photographer

Whether you’re brand new to this space or already deep in the planning process, I want to welcome you with open arms – and an invitation to dream big. Maybe you’re at the very beginning of this journey, unsure of what kind of celebration you want, or maybe you’re just wrapped up somewhere in between – I’ve created a network of resources to guide you with clarity, confidence, and a little magic as you design a wedding day that’s entirely your own.

Why Have a Maryland Elopement?

Maryland is a surprisingly diverse state when it comes to different kinds of landscapes. Within just a couple of hours’ drive, you can experience mountainous overlooks, tidal marshes, seaside cliffs, oceanfront beaches, dense pine forests, wildflower meadows, and historic cobblestone streets. Beyond the landscapes, the region is layered with a rich sense of cultural history. You’ll find a range from Indigenous heritage, contemporary arts, and incredibly lively food scenes that bring each town to life. Furthermore, Maryland sits almost directly in the center of the East Coast, making travel to other surrounding states quite accessible. It also borders and partially encompasses Washington, D.C., adding a distinct layer of historical importance to the area. It’s a state that invites a variety of exploration – and that’s exactly the spirit an elopement deserves.

Whether you’re from Maryland or nearby, here’s why you should consider eloping here:

  • Accessibility: There’s no need for flights or complex travel logistics if you’re local. But if you do want to travel abroad or elsewhere for your honeymoon, (or add to your elopement experience), there are numerous, conveniently located airports like Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), Dulles International Airport (IAD), Salisbury Regional Airport (SBY), and more. You can even just hop in the car or board the train, you’ve got options left and right for travel.
  • Variety: From the Appalachian Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay, you get a wide array of landscapes in one place. Maryland delivers contrast and character in every direction. Want two completely different backgrounds on your elopement day? Here, it’s absolutely possible, (and with ease).
  • Seasonality: Maryland experiences all four seasons with clarity. Each season brings its own unmistakable magic to an elopement, ensuring that the energy and mood you want is cemented into your celebration without question. Imagine exchanging vows surrounded by spring dogwoods, summer mist over coastal marshes, golden fall forests, or soft winter snow in a pine grove – the possibilities are all so enticing!
  • Historic & Coastal Charm: Elopements here can feel like stepping into another time. For couples who resonate with architecture and a maritime aesthetic, Maryland houses both cobblestone port towns and sailboat-filled harbors – all within arm’s reach of major cities like Baltimore and Washington D.C.. It’s no feat to find a balance between historical character and nature’s allure for your Maryland elopement.

Defining Your Elopement Vision

One of the most exciting things about eloping is that you get to throw out the rulebook. Because there are endless ways to celebrate your elopement, it can feel just a little overwhelming in the early stages of planning. Here a few questions you can ask yourselves to start in the right direction:

What emotions do you want to feel on your elopement day?

Do you imagine hiking up a mountain, watching the sunrise on the beach, or exchanging vows in a moss-covered forest?

Will it be just the two of you, or will you invite a few loved ones?

How do you want to remember this day years from now? What’s most important?

I like to call this the beginning of your storyboard – a uniquely specialized strategy I use to help couples from all over create the elopement experience of their dreams. Think of this as the visual and emotional roadmap that will guide your planning process. Make space for daydreaming, flipping through old travel memories, and identifying moments in your relationship that you might want to revisit in some shape or form.

Best Time to Elope in Maryland

Spring (March–May)

Spring is ideal if you’re drawn to soft color palettes and freshly blooming landscapes. Maryland’s parks come alive with cherry blossoms, dogwoods, and wildflowers. Temperatures are mild, making it a great time for forest or mountain elopements. Rain is a bit unpredictable this time of year, so having a flexible timeline and a Plan B is important.

Summer (June–August)

Daylight hours are longer and nights are warmer, making the summer a popular time to elope. While it can get humid, early morning or golden-hour ceremonies help beat the heat. Summer is also a perfect time for couples who want to incorporate swimming, kayaking, or water-inspired activities into their day. Thunderstorms come and go, but usually pose little problems.

Fall (September–November)

Fall in Maryland is absolutely magic. Peak foliage typically hits in mid-to-late October. Forests and mountain views into vibrant blankets of red, orange, and gold. The air is crisp, the light is golden, and crowds tend to become thinner. If you’re looking for a cinematic and slightly moody vibe, this is your season.

Winter (December–February)

Winter elopements can be wonderfully dramatic, especially in Western Maryland where snowfall covers the trees and mountains. Think icy rivers, foggy mornings, and intimate fireside celebrations. Fewer visitors mean more seclusion, but plan ahead for shorter daylight hours and partially closed roads in mountainous areas.

Navigating the Legalities

While eloping is about freedom and flexibility, there are still a few important steps to ensure your marriage is legally recognized, (if that’s the route you want to take). First, you should apply for a marriage license. You must apply for your marriage license at the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office in the same county where your ceremony will take place. Unfortunately, Maryland law does not allow you to get a license in one county, and marry in another. Once you have been issued your marriage license, it’s valid for 6 months. Also, you should know that there is a waiting period of 48 hours after you apply.

If getting legally married in your Maryland elopement location is important to you, be sure to plan ahead. If it’s not, you may consider a symbolic ceremony in your chosen destination, followed by a trip to the courthouse at a later date in your home county. This route can alleviate much of the logistical pressure, while allowing you to remain fully present during your experience. What matters most is that your day feels true to who you are, and true to your relationship.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to request certified copies of your marriage certificate once your officiant has completed and returned your license to the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office. Stay up to date with Maryland’s marriage laws here.

Choosing an Officiant for Your Maryland Elopement

In order for a marriage to be legally recognized, the state of Maryland requires an officiant to perform the ceremony. Anyone who qualifies as a religious official, a judge, or an ordained officiant, (like myself), can officiate your wedding ceremony. Many couples like to add another personal layer to their elopement celebration by asking a friend or family member to marry them. The online ordination service, the Universal Life Church, is both incredibly accessible and valid in Maryland. Remember, a self-led ceremony is still possible – as mentioned above, you can always legally solidify your marriage at the courthouse before or after your elopement.

Picking Your Maryland Elopement Team

Though elopements are typically more intimate by nature, having the right team behind you can make the experience feel well-rounded and fully supported. In fact, because elopements often happen in more remote or unconventional places, working with professionals who align with your values can really have a huge impact on the quality of your celebration. Here are three top tips for intentionally building your ideal elopement team:

Find a Photographer Who Matches Your Energy

Your elopement photographer is often the first, (and sometimes only), vendor you’ll hire – and arguably the most important. Look for someone who not only creates a level of work that speaks to you, but who also understands how to support you throughout the planning process. A great elopement photographer will help you scout locations, assist with mandatory permits, build malleable timelines around light and weather, offer planning resources, and document your day with a deep appreciation and respect for your story.

The aforementioned services above are included in every customizable Wild Elements elopement package. I specialize in story-focused elopement photography for experience-driven and adventurous couples, whether their celebrations unfold halfway across the world, or right here in my home state of Maryland. Select Vendors that Fit the Scale of Your Day

Just because you’re eloping doesn’t mean you have to forego beauty, intention, or luxury. One could argue that the smaller the guest list, the more space you have to be thoughtful in every decision. You may consider adding other vendors to elevate your elopement experience, including, (but not limited to), a florist/floral designer to create artful arrangements inspired by your landscape, a private chef or a curated picnic service for a post-ceremony meal, a hair and makeup artist, or a celebrant/officiant who can co-create a ceremony that’s meaningful to you. You can choose to work with a full team, or just one or two – the choice is entirely your own.

Keep Communication Intentional

Elopements are such personal and authentic celebrations, which is why prioritizing vendors who share in your excitement and make you feel seen from the beginning is important. Do they ask thoughtful questions about your plans, or your relationship? Do they seem genuinely invested in your vision? Are they transparent with you, and extend their professionalism in a kind way? These are the people who will not only witness your day, but they will also help bring it to life. Choosing vendors who truly understand the meaning behind your elopement creates a ripple effect, allowing you to feel more present and more connected to the experience you’ve created collaboratively.

Other East Coast Elopement Ideas

Although Maryland boasts a wildly underrated range of landscapes and experiences, one of its best advantages is its close proximity to so many other stunning East Coast destinations. If you’re open to exploring beyond state lines, (whether it be for your vows, a pre-wedding excursion, or a honeymoon that starts right after the ceremony), the East Coast has no shortage of places to elope. Listed below, you’ll find a compilation of some of my favorite elopement locations worthy of your consideration. Let your curiosity guide you, and trust that wherever you choose to elope, you can make it unforgettable.

Shenandoah National Park

Just a few hours drive from Maryland, Shenandoah feels like it could be a world away. This part of the Blue Ridge mountain range offers breathtaking overlooks, cascading waterfalls, and ridgelines that glow during golden-hour. This spot is perfect for couples who don’t mind a little hiking, and find comfort in vast and moody landscapes. The early mornings are wrapped in the most magical mist, and the fall exudes the most extraordinary red and gold foliage. For a post-elopement celebration, you can visit one of the many wineries in the Shenandoah Valley, as there are 30+ in the area.

New River Gorge National Park

This fairly new national park is nestled into one of Maryland’s closest neighbors, West Virginia. New River Gorge National Park is one of the most rugged and awe-inspiring elopement locations along the East Coast. You can expect to find views of the river canyon, vegetated forests, and suspension bridges. Couples who are active in the outdoors will thrive here, as you can hike, climb, or raft in the area. It’s a destination fit for a multi-day celebration, with other amazing outdoor spaces to explore nearby. If you want to stay even closer to Maryland, Harper’s Ferry is also located in West Virginia, and about a two hour drive from Baltimore.

The Catskills

Upstate New York is saturated in picturesque elopement destinations, but the Catskills are unrivaled. These forested mountains contain a poetic mix of hidden swimming holes, waterfalls, and timeless cabins. If you’re imagining fire-lit evenings and whimsical woodland settings, this region is made of everything you’re looking for. It’s especially popular during autumn, but every season here feels like a dream. Additionally, you’ll find eclectic small towns, retreats, and historic inns that lend themselves to the overall charm of this part of New York. Some other worthwhile New York elopement locations include Taughannock Falls, the Adirondack Mountains, and Watkins Glen State Park.

Catskills Elopement

Acadia National Park

If the dramatic landscapes of the coast call out to you, Acadia might be the elopement destination you’ve been searching for. Ocean cliffs, miles of pine-fringed coastline, and granite peaks are staples of this Maine national park. Each season here feels cinematic, but early fall comes with an unbeatable blend of salty air and changing leaves. Acadia is home to Cadillac Mountain, one of the first places the sunrises in the United States. It goes without saying that the sunrises here are legendary, but so are the sunsets.

Your Elopement Can Be Anything You Want

The most powerful thing about choosing to elope is that it hands the pen back to you so you. Whether you’re planning on a Maryland elopement, or tying the knot somewhere up north, eloping on the East Coast means you have options. Being a Maryland native, I know first hand about all of the forgotten and under appreciated beauty this state, and its counterparts, contribute to the world. Your elopement can be anything you want, even if it doesn’t require flying halfway across the world or sailing the seven seas. As an elopement photographer that’s passionate about helping couples realize their ultimate wedding day dreams, I help them not only document their day, but craft something that’s grounded in personal authenticity. There are no blueprints you have to follow, only the freedom to create something that reflects your relationship in a way that feels honest and alive.

If you’re dreaming of a Maryland elopement, a celebration on the East Coast, or even something farther abroad, I’d be honored to help you bring it to life. Reach out here to get started, or browse my other free resources to keep planning something unquestionably you.
